"Rogue Traders / Cold Callers" reported in Kempsey - 2nd February 2026

We are warning residents about rogue traders / cold callers after reports of them in Kempsey on Monday 2nd February 2026 in the afternoon.

A "rogue trader" is a term given to individuals who turn up unannounced at people's houses and offer to carry out work such as hedge cutting, general gardening, roofing or tarmac driveways.

They often cite that they have spotted a problem and offer to fix it for you, however, they will charge extortionate amounts of money for minor or poor-quality work.

This is a timely reminder that at this time of year, rogue traders may be operating in the county, and we are concerned that residents across our rural policing area may be targeted as we are soon coming into the spring season when gardens need trimming back or cleaning roofs or driveways.

We advise that you do not accept work from cold callers or leaflets posted through the door, instead, choose a trusted contractor.

"Do not be fooled by cold callers who look professional with business cards and sign-written vehicles. 

"Get recommendations from friends or family and get at least two quotes for any work you intend to get done."

There have been reports in the past of some rogue traders offering to accompany their victim to the bank to withdraw funds for the work.

If any residents would like a “No Cold Caller sticker” for their property or for a friend or relative then reply to this message and it can be delivered to you.

The Citizens Advice Bureau website contains good advice as to how to find a trusted tradesperson.

Do not be pressured into accepting work.

"If a tradesperson becomes intimidating or oppressive, then politely decline any work, close and lock your doors and if necessary, report the matter to the Police.

"Elderly and vulnerable residents are most at risk from this type of activity, so please ensure you make your neighbours aware of this issue.
